I have been a practicing RD for 8 years, though I took time away from a paying job to raise my son, Ryland. I obtained my Bachelor’s degree in health care science-nutrition, Master’s degree in sport nutrition, and completed the 10-month dietetic internship at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. It was in the graduate program that I had the opportunity to learn from the best at the U.S. Olympic Training Center, one of my favorite experiences yet.
I became a Registered Dietitian for a few reasons: 1.) it is very much my passion and part of who I am, 2.) dieting was normalized as I observed family members struggle with weight and yo-yo dieting, and 3.) my own struggle with body image and anxiety that gave rise to an eating disorder.
I remember growing up with Slim Fast shakes and bars in the cupboard, Weight Watcher's cards on the kitchen counter, even attending Weight Watcher's meetings, endless diet books and magazines scattered about the house, and Richard Simmons videos and exercise equipment that evolved with the exercise trend. As many of us do at a young age, I learned what bodies were "good" and what bodies were "bad"; and I learned what to do about it- eat less, eat boring foods, and follow a diet and exercise plan.
